After discovering letters written to the Herald in 1912 about the first successful trip by motor vehicle across the Drakensberg, I wrote an article for Weg/Go! about it.
I later discovered the tale about an attempt to travel by car from Cape Town to Cairo, which ended in tragedy in Zambia. This also resulted in an article for Weg/Go!
Earlier this year the centenary of the first successful attempt to travel from Cape Town to Cairo came and went with not so much as a whisper about that.
I wrote an article about that journey – that took 16 months – and it was published on The Heritage Portal.
This is not so much about the history of Potchefstroom, although the expedition passed through Potchefstroom with just a mention to the fact, late in 1924.
